Hey guys, I am a new to all this. I just got a 86 stang with a 351W in it. The guy I got it from just installed the new motor himself but could never get it running for more then 30 sec. The car has all new plugs, wires, distrubutor, new coil etc. I was told that the motor is a 1971 351W.

Before I touched anything the motor would turn over but would only run for about 30 sec and then die. It almost acted like it wasnt getting fuel. Since then I changed the carb to a brand new edelbrock 650 with electric choke. I tried stating the car and it did the same thing as before. I checked the fuel lines and i am getting good fuel pressure and fuel shoots in the carb when hitting the throttle linkage. So I then put a new MSD coil on the car, same problem. Next I went ahead and installed the ignitor conversion kit to a electronic ignition to get away from the points system that was on the car. I am certain i have the timing close enough to at least start with the distrubutor. I have also checked the timing with the crank & cam and all seem to be correct. After i installed the electronic ignition conversion kit when I go to start the car it blows air out of the carb with a slight mist of fuel and wont ever turn over. Now its almost like its not getting any spark. I pulled the plugs and all the plugs looked good and all are getting spark. I guess what I am asking is what should I do next?

Hi and welcome to the site Matt,

Have you put a timing light on it to see where your timing is set at?

Just a thought,
Kyle

Kyle thanks for the reply, I did check the timing with a timing light. I have it right around 10 degrees. I have heard that I might need to adjust the valves. Could this be why it is blowing air out of the carb? On a ford motor/351W how do you set the valves? On my chevy motor I ushally hold the push rod until its tight and then turn a quarter turn tighter then rotate 180 degrees then do the others.
