Wrench Rookie 101: EPD (engine part descriptions)/Blackbox

As a rookie, I have done a decent job of educating myself with the engine parts after working on it all winter. Need help on this one.

The hose from the cold air intake tube to the plenum there is inline a little blackbox (please dont tell me it is the same blackbox they recover from airplane crashes). I assume it is some type of filter? I have not seen any aftermarket replacements (looking for dress up purposes). Is there a micron filter in there? Can something like an Aeromotive reusable filter be used if I replaced it with the proper micron measurement i.e. 40, 100 micron or whatever it may be? For engine dress up purposes, I have been replacing my hosing with stainless steel braid and that black factory set up front and center stands out like a tird in punch bowl.

I was thinking of replacing with the areomotive filter since they offer some really nice customized components in anodized red, chrome, etc. Am I being dangerous here and should just leave it alone? Would like to hear if anyone out there has an alternative dressup for that set up they have done.

Thanks

Does that mean it can be ran safely without it? Live in Kansas, so not worried about inspections. I pulled it off and and ran straight tube and the engine runs fine without it but have not road tested it.

were these questions too technical of a challenge for this community? since no one here seemed to know for sure what it is, found out elsewhere.

See, even you experienced gearheads can learn from wrench rookies!
(heh-heh sorry couldn't resist bein a smarta**, jus mesn withya).

It's just a silencer, runs fine without it.

well im with the other guy kinda, i belive it might just be the pcv filter, but then, why would there be a filter, if the whole purpose of the pvc is to reburn them gases? i dunno, go to a dealership ask them, make a big deal when they don't know, maybe they will give you a t-shirt.:woohoo:
