It's been awhile since i did this. Somewhere near the distributor you will have whats called a spout connector. It's hard to explain what it looks like maybe you can do a search for it but unplug it before you start. Make sure the hold down is loose enough to turn the dist. Not too loose.. just enough to move it. And most likely you will need to clean your harmonic balancer so the numbers are visible. Start the engine and according to what kind of light read the numbers ant set where you want it. reinstall spout.
But, a warning, if this thing has alot of miles the balancer may have spun and it may not run well after you finish. Its always a good idea to mark it somehow so you have a reference point to go back too. hope this helps.

It's best to probably just do the trial and error. But i dont think you can go too far with 87 octane. Just listen for detonation(pinging).

I'd recommend running premium in it anyway. Gas prices are high but paying for 91-92 over 87 is only the matter of a buck or two. With premium in the car you should be able to get atleast 14 degrees out of it. Best thing to do is just start at 12, put it in 4th gear at a low rpm and put it to the floor. If you don't hear pinging or a popping sound, you're good. Now go up to 14, repeat. Keep going up in 1-2 degrees at a time until you hear a pinging (detonation) and then back it off a degree or so.
